SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Running at 17 minutes, we don’t blame anyone who calls this compilation a stunningly shameless and utterly irritating marketing gimmick. You see, in line with the release of the third chapter of the wildly popular franchise that is Toy Story, the record label has come up with this CD containing six songs from all three films. Elsewhere, there is a digital download of Randy Newman’s delightful score, which apparently isn’t available for customers in Singapore. Tsk tsk.
So what do we do with this CD compilation of songs? We listen to them and smile – that’s what we do. From Randy Newman’s catchy “I Will go Sailing No More” and upbeat “Strange Things” (these two songs are 15 years old, mind you), to Sarah McLachlan’s achingly beautiful “When She Loved Me” and Riders in the Sky’s jolly “Woody’s Roundup” (these two are 11 years old), we smile as we reminisce the scenes from Toy Story and its successful sequel.
Rounding up the CD is Gipsy King’s cheeky “You’ve Got a Friend in Me (Para El Buzz Espanol)” and Randy Newman’s family friendly “We Belong Together’ from Toy Story 3. We have no idea what’s going on in the former song, but it sounds cheery enough. The last song on the compilation has some uplifting lyrics which will bring merriment and joy to any gloomy day.
We remain disturbed to why the record producers couldn’t make space to contain the original “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman – the audacity! Meanwhile, this CD will be good for the uninitiated Toy Story lover, who may hunt down the enjoyable soundtrack score albums from the last two movies. Oh, this CD may also be lapped up by driving parents who want a peaceful car ride that lasts for a good 17 minutes.
