SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
With comedian Adam Sandler
smiling to us on the cover of this soundtrack album, we were
expecting a collection of happy songs which will cheer us
up in the gloomy state of things surrounding us. And with
a movie title like this, it is only natural that we were anticipating
some really radio friendly tunes to perk up our moods. But
just 15 minutes into this 51 minute album, we began thinking
to ourselves: This definitely isn’t one merry CD (Sandler
must have given us that perception) as we expected to be. On the bright side, it does feature rare outtakes and exclusive unreleased tracks and demos from James Taylor, Wilco featuring Andrew Bird and John Lennon.
Sir Paul McCartney, formerly from The Beatles,
kicks off the repertoire with “Great Day”, a somewhat
breezy song filled with gentle but forlorn instrumentation.
English musicians Robert Plant and the Sensation croons the
indie sounding “All the King’s Horses”,
while American singer songwriter Warren Zevon performs the
poignantly written “Keep Me in Your Heart”. The
enduring and successful Neil Diamond sings soulfully what
love is all about in “We (Early Take)”, and another
Beatles member Ringo Starr makes things a little nostalgic
with “Photograph”.
The leading man of the movie, Sandler contributes
two tracks on this very listenable soundtrack. You’d
be surprised how melancholic he sounds on “Real Love
(Live)” and “George Simmons Soon Will Be Gone”.
If we must say, the song about Sandler’s character George
Simmons is a fresh listen, although it doesn’t flatter
his vocals a lot. Meanwhile, actor Jason Schwartzman’s
indie project Coconut Records has two songs “Wires”
and “I Am Young” on this disc. Both are decently
produced tracks which are pleasant in its own non mainstream
right.
If
there is one thing that is funny on this soundtrack, it would
be Maude Apatow and Larry Goldings’ rendition of the
popular tune “Memory (From Cats)”. Otherwise,
this album is one surprisingly heartfelt listen. If you look
closely at Sandler’s smile again, you can almost notice
something melancholic about it, giving you a clue that things
aren’t that bright and cheery on this soundtrack.
