REVIEW
If
you are familiar with “The Fast & The Furious”
franchises, then you are no stranger to the upbeat rock score
and the slew of hip-hop rap music that accompanied the movies.
With the third instalment set in the Land of the Rising Sun,
it‘s not surprising that prominent local music acts
are roped in to contribute to the soundtrack.
Leading
the 12 tracks is the theme music “Tokyo Drift (Fast
& Furious)” by Teriyaki Boyz. A mixture of less
than perfect English rap with Japanese compiled with some
“Kawaii” girly voices, this is one track that
will keep on spinning in your head even when the iPod is off.
Another
notably inclusion is 5, 6, 7, 8’s “The Barracuda”.
The girl band from “Kill Bill” if you can recall
contributed a Beatles style funky retro tune that will have
you craving for more. Of course, if you wish to be exposed
to more East West fusion acts, there’s also Dragon Ash’s
“Resound”.
And
who says the album producers are forgetting the rest of the
crowd? The second track “Six Days- The Remix”
by DJ Shadow and Mos Def is a memorable number. Be awed by
the singing and the numbing rap piece. In addition, 2 tracks
by Don Omar differ from the rest of the plate with its acoustic
use of the guitars in “Bandalerios”. No doubt
“Bandalerios” will transport you from the neon
streets of Tokyo to a quiet café on the sidewalk sipping
your latte.
Last
but not least, the movie’s Composer Brian Tyler (renowned
for the music of “Darkness Falls” and “Constantine”)
and Slash from Velvet Revolver teamed up for the electrifying
“Mustang Nismo” on the last track of the album.
Ditching
the usual A-list line-up (such as Limp Bizkit and Ludacris
who were featured in the earlier instalments) and mixing in
a good lot of Eastern acts, the album producers such as director
Justin Lin must be credited for these fresh offerings. The
movie itself won’t open here till August 3. In the meantime,
slot in this cd and imagine yourself speeding down PIE in
your flashy Nissan Z.
