SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
When it comes to work, this reviewer has always believed in
the importance of chemistry. What would Batman be without
Robin? How can Hans Solo brave the galaxies without Chewbacca?
And Buzz Lightyear can never soar to infinity and beyond without
Woody.
Similarly,
we love a good director-composer pairing. One of the most
anticipated scores of this summer blockbuster season has to
be maestro John Williams’ score for Steven Spielberg’s
fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series. And yes, the
pairing of these two talents still works fine this time round.
The generous 77-minute album kicks off with the familiar “Raiders
March”, and that sets the pace going. The household
theme is weaved into several other tracks on this recommended
album, just to remind you that this is an Indy score.
A
track to look out for is “Irina's Theme”, which
introduces the villainous character in a looming manner. The
ominous and intimidating brasses remind us of the dark themes
presented on the soundtrack of Star Wars movies. And what
is an action score without action cues? There are a few notable
ones here: “The Adventures of Mutt” is an enjoyably
exciting signature Williams composition, “The Snake
Pit” is gleefully fun, “A Whirl Through Academe”
will keep you at the edge of your seat and “The Jungle
Chase” is an orchestral extravaganza with rushing strings
and brasses. Fans of the music genius will identify with these
cues, noting the similar style used in earlier “Harry
Potter” and “Star Wars” scores.
Williams
also injects some humourous moments, notably in “The
Journey to Akator”. Check out the second half of this
three minute track where light and jolly percussions and instrumentations
are introduced to lighten up the mood. “Ants!”
is an aptly composed track which brings out the silly but
fun panic and terror brought on by the fatal insects.
Given
the adrenaline driven mood of the movie, there aren’t
many tender moments in this album. Everything is tied up nicely
in the nine minute “Finale”, where lush strings
lead in the other main themes of the series. As the last note
crescendos and brings the soundtrack to a close, you are again
reminded how Williams will always be one of the greatest music
masters of our time.
