SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Valentine’s
Day happens only once a year. But what if you want to feel
the lurve all 365 days of the year? Listen to love songs every
day, that’s our advice. There are so many CD compilations
out there proclaiming that if there is only one CD you should
on, that’s the one. But what smart marketing this is,
releasing a romantic movie (simply entitled Valentine’s
Day) and a soundtrack album to go along with it. Couples,
get ready to watch the movie, and buy the CD after walking
out of the cinema.
In this movie which tells the intertwining
stories of a group people living in Los Angeles (incidentally,
they are extremely gorgeous people played by Julia Roberts,
Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, and Patrick Dempsey
amongst others), the soundtrack is one jolly affair with different
styles catering to different tastes. The collection of 18
songs with the inclusion of two new songs by American country-pop
singer-songwriter, record producer and actress (we continue
to wonder why Kanye West had to traumatise the poor girl publicly
at the MTV Video Music Awards) Taylor Swift and American singer-songwriter,
guitarist, actress, and poet (aren’t artistes these
days talented?) Jewel.
Swift’s new song “Today Was A
Fairytale” kicks off the romance filled album with the
right amount of fluff and love. It is followed by the reggae
tune “Say Hey (I Love You)” performed by Michael
Franti & Spearhead, the classical feel good “I’m
in the Mood for Love” belted melodically by Jools Holland
and featuring Jamiroquai. The lightweight “Everyday”
by Sausalito Foxtrot and Jewel’s new single “Stay
Here Forever” contrasts each other nicely, showcasing
different styles of girl power.
Elsewhere
in the 59 minute album, you can find familiar tunes like Amy
Winehouse’s “Cupid”, Maroon 5’s “The
Way You Look Tonight” and Joss Stone’s “4
and 20”. The evergreen “Te Quiero Dijiste”
by Nat King Cole and the psychedelic “Somebody to Love”
by Leighton Meester featuring Robin Thicke are thoughtful
additions to the compilation. The pleasant surprise comes
in the form of the ethnic “Signed Sealed Delivered I’m
Yours” by Anju Ramapriyam, which closes the lovely album
with a bang, and hopefully, leaving smiles on you and your
loved one’s faces.
