ALBUM REVIEW:
Peyton Reed’s movie about a man who challenges himself to say “yes” to everything for an entire year had one of columnist (you know who you are) changing his worldview… for a while. If this reviewer could, he would love to change his cynical attitude too, but alas, he never got to watch the movie. Will this soundtrack be enough to make him a better person then?
Strictly speaking, this 41 minute album is a showcase of American rock band Eels’ music. Formed by singer/ songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, and better known as “A Man Called E”, “Mr. E”, or simply “E”, there are nine out of 13 tracks on this CD dedicated to the laidback music performed by the band. Kicking off the album is “Man Up”, a lazy tune that will soothe your nerves on a sunny weekend. Then we have “Bus Stop Boxer”, a strange but interesting track that will make you sit up and listen. Following that is “To Lick Your Boots”, a pleasant song that will leave a smile on your face. “The Good Old Days” is a calming composition that may make you thinking about the better yesteryears.
After about half an hour of music performed by Eels, we get a change in mood with Munchausen by Proxy, an amusing collaboration featuring the female lead Zooey Deschanel and all girl electro soul punk group Von Iva. If you really had to know, the term “Munchausen by Proxy” is associated with insidious disorders in which injury is deliberately and gradually inflicted upon a person usually for gaining attention – strange, huh?
Equally amusing are their four contributions to the soundtrack. You’ve got to listen to them to understand how quirky it is. Be it the sultry “Sweet Ballad”, the catchy “Uh-huh” or the synthesizer heavy “Yes Man”, these inject energy to an otherwise quiet soundtrack album.
Has it then made me a better person? Well, I don’t see myself looking as happy as Jim Carrey on the CD cover… yet.
