SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
A very cool soundtrack this is.
The
album to Steven Soderbergh’s final entry of his heist
trilogy characterizes what cool music is about. Composer David
Holmes gives us 44 minutes of stylishly energetic music typified
by synthesizers, electric guitars and drum beats. The Belfast-born
Holmes worked in a club as a DJ when he was 15 – No
wonder the man is able to produce such enjoyably hypnotizing
funk music.
After winning the BMI Film and Music Awards for both his scores
for Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Ocean’s Twelve (2002),
Homes is back with another too-cool-for-mere-mortals soundtrack
that will swing you off balance.
Tracks
like “11, 12 & 13”, “Benedict Returns”
and “Trapdoor Man” are cues that made you wish
that you were as suave and smooth like the leading men of
the movie. When the cool-meter hits its highest in “Dice
Men”, it sends you into ecstasy mode.
Elsewhere,
expect similarly swanky score material worthy to be played
at all late night parties. There is the mysterious swing-alicious
“The Nose” and the psychedelic “Fender Roads”.
There are no soft and lyrical moments in this techno-groovy
soundtrack.
And the
producers are not apologetic about it.
Included
in the album are also hip tunes like Frank Sinatra’s
cover of Lee Hazlewood’s “This Town” and
The Motherhood’s “Soul Town”. The blasting
trumpets and snazzy trombones are accompanied by flamboyant
percussions which will have you swing your hips to the flashily
bright jazz music.
What
this reviewer needs now is one of those cool tuxedos, and
probably a good looking enough stature to go with it.
