SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Things
have changed since the 1980s – the time where a group
of creatures called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ruled this
reviewer’s world. Not only are the turtles coolly termed
known as “TMNT” to the young punks now, the catchy
theme song that goes “…Heroes in a half shell!”
have been replaced by heart-thumping rock tunes performed
by bands like Jet and Cobra Starship.
The
45-minute album opens with Gym Class Heroes’ “Shell
Shock”, and these dudes out-rightly set the mood for
this soundtrack album. Following that tune are other wailing
and guitar-heavy tracks like Meg & Dia’s “Roses”
and Amber Pacific’s “Fall Back Into My Life”.
We
particularly love Big City Rock’s “Black Betty”
for its strange power to induce feet tapping and head bobbing,
although we still have no idea what the vocalist is warbling
about in this 3-odd minute song.
Call
us weaklings, but too much of this genre of music can cause
an unnecessary headache, especially if we penned this review
late at night. Depending on how you look at it, spinning the
album on your car before going to work may actually be an
energy booster for the long and stressful day ahead.
Composer
Klaus Badelt (The Promise, Poseidon) contributes two very
brief score tracks on this disc, making us rather unsatisfied,
because they are rather exciting and enthralling to listen
to. The mix of oriental instrument and Western orchestrations
is a nice approach to scoring this movie about, well, ninja
turtles.
All
you nostalgic fools out there, it is time to move on and forget
about those cheesy lyrics that chanted: “Leonardo leads;
Donatello does machines; Raphael is cool but rude; Michelangelo
is a party dude…” Like animation in movies, the
music has moved on, dudes.
