REVIEW
Music
and Lyrics, the latest offering from the golden couple of
rom-com, Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant, owes a huge debt to
the musical creations (and appropriately inane lyrics) from
Fountain of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger for carrying the
heart of the movie. For a film based on the aping of ‘80s
new wave pop and the post-contemporary Shakira-Britney complex,
this compilation of tracks is surprisingly earnest and first-rate
audiokitsch. The
real bonus though, stems from the thoroughly professional
performances by Hugh Grant and newcomer Haley Bennett. Many
of us take Hugh for granted in rom-coms, but who would have
thought the power of Pro-tools would make Hugh a Wham!-Elton
John crossover? Hugh Grant is responsible for no less then
five tracks in the album, including the inspired “Pop!
Goes my Heart”, “Don’t Write Me Off”
and “Way Back into Love”, ‘80s revival tracks
that received extended playtime in the movie. My vote, however,
goes to the earthy synthesized beats in “Dance with
Me Tonight”.
Haley
Bennett, a scene-stealer in the movie, steals the show in
this soundtrack as well with three of my favourite tracks
in the album: “Buddha’s Delight”, “Entering
Bootytown” and “Slam”. Though these tracks
are obvious parodies of Britney hits, they are still a hoot
to listen to. Pity though, the compilation did not include
the karmic orgasm remix of “Way Back into Love”.
This
is one of those soundtracks that outshine the movie itself.
