SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
What is this? You get Justin Timberlake to star in your movie, and you don’t get him to contribute a track or two on the soundtrack album? After voicing Prince Arthur in Shrek the Third (2007) and not appearing on the soundtrack, he plays a certain Jacque ‘Le Coq’ Grande in Marco Schnabel’s comedy, and doesn’t perform any songs on its soundtrack album. We were so looking forward to hearing him!
The movie’s leading man (The Guru himself of course) Mike Myers, on the other hand, has his voice appearing several times on this disc with a short runtime of 35 minutes. First, you hear him in the light hearted “9 to 5”. Then you hear him in the romantic “More Than Words”. That is followed by the jumpy “The Joker”. These three popular songs are sung by Myers with traditional sitar accompaniment. As if that is not enough, you’ll also get to hear dialogue snippets from the movie – listen out for The Guru’s wise words in “Stop Hitting Yourself”, “My Name is Guru Pitka” and “Guru Lineage”.
He tells us that “people may say bad things about you, but you must never say bad things about yourself”, and that he “wears a chastity belt”, and how he has a lineage of several gurus above him. Err, sure.
The rest of the album contains radio friendly hits like Telma Hopkins & TC3 (Toronto Children’s Concert Choir)’s gospel “Lead me to your Rock”, Robbie Nevil’s psychedelic “C’est La Vie”, and beat this – Celine Dion’s holler worthy “I Drove All Night”. This is balanced with a nice mix of Indian inspired cues like Lata Mangeshkar & Mohd. Rafi’s old school “Mere Mitwa Mere Meet Re” and George S. Clinton’s only score track on the album “Guru Vindaloo”,
The disc ends with the very funny “Guru Pitka Chant” performed by Guru Pitka’s Ashram Band. If only they got Timberlake to perform a solo on that one.
