SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
If the soundtrack albums of Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Volumes
1 and 2 are lying proudly on your CD shelf, then this latest
collection of music from director Quentin Tarantino’s
new movie deserves a place as well.
Like
the other Tarantino films, this movie from the motion picture
double feature contains rollicking tunes from the 60s and
70s, and the rare tracks are a guilty pleasure to fans’
ears. The rare collection is obviously a tribute by the quirky
filmmaker to some of the loveliest but forgotten music from
that era. Score material like Ennio Morricone’s creepy
“Paranoia Prima” and Pino Donaggio’s melancholic
“Sally And Jack” will please vintage film music
fans.
The album kicks off with Jack Nitzsche’s “The
Last Race”. The energized track evokes the images of
the terror unleashed by the stuntman psycho played by Kurt
Russell in the movie. And like other Tarantino movie soundtracks,
this one features dialogue tracks from the movie. Russell,
Rose McGowan, Tracie Thoms and Zoe Bell’s exchange of
words may be filled with vulgarities and explicit content,
but the snippets are fun to listen to.
Fun
is the key word in this otherwise brief album with a total
runtime of 38 minutes. Eddie Floyd’s psychedelic “Good
Love, Bad Love”, Dave Dee’s rhythmic “Hold
Tight” and April March’s cheesy “Chick Habit”
will stick in your mind upon multiple listens.
Whether
or not you love Tarantino’s in-your-face style of movies,
this soundtrack album makes a good stand-alone collection.
Of course, it’d be a bonus if you’d enjoyed the
movie, then the tracks on this disc would be so much more
fun to listen to.
