SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
On the cover of this soundtrack album is a liner note from Drew Barrymore which reads: "This Soundtrack Is My Mix Tape For You!" Yes, thanks to Ms Barrymore, whose directorial debut tells the story of an indie rock loving misfit finding solace in a roller derby league, we have this gleefully wonderful collection of 19 non mainstream songs. If you are a fan of underground electronic rock music, we guarantee that you’ll love every minute of this 58 minute disc.
We are exhilarated the moment the album kicks off with indie pop group Tilly and the Wall's "Pot Kettle Black". Listen to this track on Monday, and the energetic song will perk up your day, or for that matter, the entire week. This is followed by the legendary punk band Ramones' "Sheena is a Punk Rocker", which is no doubt an invigorating listen. Hip hop makes its appearance next in "What’s the Attitude", performed by Cut Chemist, a former member of the funk Latin band Ozmomatli and hip hop group Jurassic 5, featuring Hymnal.
By this time, you'd have gotten the hang of the music genre in this album, and would probably be looking forward to more of such dynamic tracks. While some underground music can be filled with angst, the songs on this compilation are brimming with oomph which never compromises on the youthful front. Whether it is the vigour in Canadian electronic musician Peaches' "Boys Wanna Be Her", the get up and go attitude in country singer Dolly Parton's "Jolene" or American the vintage power in rock band .38 Special's "Caught Up In You", you’d be adoring the music that is playing in the airwaves.
Elsewhere, you get girl power in female rock band The Ettes' "Crown of Age", alternative quirkiness in Little Joy's (made up of Brazilian guitarist Rodrigo Amarante, The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti and Binki Shapiro) "Unattainable" and guilty popping pleasure in popular female singing quartet The Chordettes' rendition of "Lollipop (Squeak E. Clean & Desert Eagles Remix)".
Taking on the role of the executive soundtrack producer, Barrymore has put together a collection of songs which are ideal for all moments of your life, whether it's falling in love, riding in cars, jogging with music in your ears, or simply chilling out with friends on a lazy weekend afternoon.
