SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
This reviewer has no idea whether he will ever get a chance
to step into the romantic city of Barcelona in his lifetime,
so he’d have to make do with this soundtrack for the
time being. The 42 minute album contains music used in Woody
Allen’s lighthearted romantic film starring the sexy
Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.
And like the director who mentions in his CD liner notes that
he did not know any Spanish music, we too do not have much
knowledge about it. But judging from the breezy and sun kissed
guitar melodies from the 11 tracks on this album, we are sure
that the eclectic collection will please many people.
The
catchy title song “Barcelona” is a bouncy and
feathery tune performed by indie band Giulia y los Tellarini.
You can almost picture Gaudi’s unique and individualistic
works in your mind. Following that, you get flamenco guitarist
Juan Serrano’s exotic sounding “Gorrion”,
composer guitarist Paco de Lucia’s playful yet affecting
“entre Dos Aguas” and French musicians Jean-Felix
Lalanne and Muriel Anderson’s slower paced “El
Noi De La Mare”.
While
the music on this disc may not go down well with, ahem, certain
less cultured folks who prefer their music ear splittingly
loud, we’d advise that, for the well being of your soul,
to play this soundtrack to soothe your gentle nerves.
Jazz
musicians The Stephane Wrembel Trio’s “Big Brother”
is hypnotically seductive, Latin musician Juan Quesada’s
“Asturias” has a dangerous espionage feel to it,
while the collaboration between the Biel Ballester Trio, Graci
Pedro and Leo Hipaucha is “Your Shining Eyes”,
a playfully orchestration of strumming guitars.
Whatever
your mood, this diverse collection of music will be a treat
to your stressed up soul. And it doesn’t take a veteran
director like Allen to tell you that.
