ALBUM REVIEW:
Given that English director Guy Ritchie is giving renowned
detective Sherlock Holmes a spanking new feel, it only makes
sense that Germany born composer Hans Zimmer comes on board
to provide a snazzy music score for the latest screen update
of the famed crime solver. And for those who are familiar
with Zimmer’s highly entertaining works (Kung Fu Panda,
Pirates of the Caribbean series), they can be assured that
this will also be one enjoyable ride, and we mean every 52
minute of this soundtrack album.
From
the opening track “Discombobulate”, score collectors
would immediately identify this as Zimmer’s work. The
signature energy is unmistakable, and the engaging pulse is
definitely the Oscar winning composer’s trademark. The
main theme of the movie is straightforwardly presented from
the beginning of the album. It is an easily recognizable tune
that you cannot miss, a playfully cheeky theme that will be
repeated throughout the album. There may not be much variation
here (another trait of Zimmer’s soundtrack albums),
but it scores high on accessibility.
“I
Never Woke Up in Handcuffs Before” injects a jokingly
mischievous Indian element, where you can picture a charismatically
suave Indian host welcoming his audiences at the introduction
of a talk show. Yes, that’s what a piece of music can
do to your imagination outside the movie’s context.
“My
Mind Rebels at Stagnation” and “Data, Data, Data”
conveys moods of mystery, while maintaining the enjoyable
main theme heard earlier.
Basses
are very much utilized throughout the album, and with a good
home system, you can blast your afternoon away with booming
tracks like “He’s Killed the Dog Again”
and “Marital Sabotage”. Elsewhere, be treated
to strings galore in “Not in Blood, But in Bond”
and a fulfilling 18 minute cue “Psychological Recovery…
6 Months” that follows.
Before
you know it, your music journey with the new and improved
Sherlock Holmes would conclude with the grandeur “Catatonic”,
and this is where you want to play it from the top again.
