ALBUM REVIEW:
It
is easy to classify this 20th anniversary reissue soundtrack
as a marketing ploy to milk money out of unknowing consumers
who are excited about the upcoming Transformers live-action
movie directed by Michael Bay.
But
this soundtrack is a must-own for true nostalgic fans of the
1986 animated movie. You probably won’t hear music like
that in the 21st century.
The
55-minute album contains 10 tracks found on the original 1986
album, as well as four new bonus tracks to commemorate the
movie’s 20th anniversary. Included in the liner notes
is a short message penned by composer Vince DiCola whose work
also includes Rocky IV (1985).
There
are both songs (embrace the rock music from the 80s!) and
score material (embrace the dated sounds of electronica!)
from the movie.
You
may find them cheesy, but these songs rocked the 80s. Check
out Stan Bush’s rollicking “The Touch”,
Spectre General’s deafening "Hunger" and Weird
Al Yankovic’s silly-sounding "Dare to Be Stupid".
DiCola’s
score reminds us of the television cartoon series we used
to watch on television - tacky yet appealing. Tracks like
“Death of Optimus Prime” and “Autobot /
Decepticon Battle” may sound epic and impressive, but
listening to the heavy synthesizer beats and thumping drum
rolls will paint pictures of mega-destruction and powerful
explosions in your head.
Not
that it’s a bad thing, because this soundtrack reminded
us of the wonderful times we had when we were kids. Altogether
now, sing to the best-known tune on the album – “Transformers,
more than meets the eye! Transformers, robots in disguise!”
These
are tunes you’d definitely not find in the upcoming
Transformers movie.
