ALBUM REVIEW:
Some
think “indie” also stands for “indulgence”.
Much of “Catch and Release” soundtrack, unfortunately,
bears out this perception. This soundtrack should effectively
end after The Magic Numbers’ “Mornings Eleven”,
the fourth track into the collection and incidentally the
best song in the album. The songs just go steadily downhill
from there.
Mellow
alternative rock is good, but you won’t say that 17
songs into a soundtrack about a movie starring Silent Bob
and Sydney Bristow trying to act cute. Paul Westerberg (of
Open Season fame) has to make
an obligatory entrance here to complete this wild hallucination
of a movie soundtrack. It is definitely a tall order to select
indie music for a romantic comedy about life beyond the death
of a fiancé, but one just need to look at the Stranger
than Fiction soundtrack for inspiration.
