REVIEW
Beyonce
fans take heart: It takes the 6 foot 7 Jennifer “Jamazon”
Hudson to belt out something as mind-blowing as And I’m
Telling You I’m Not Going. If a girl hollers at me this
way, I would have kissed her toes even before the force-of-nature
90-second finale of the song (Audiences with a history of
heart ailments should consult a doctor before jacking up the
ipod volume). Yes the whole world is gonna love you, banshee.
More
on the much-heralded gut-buster: The first time I heard the
song in the train, I experience what can only be described
as a sonic boom – weak knees, cold sweat, diluted irises,
irregular heartbeat and a slack jaw. Both Jennifer and Beyonce
Knowles were given power-ballads to hit those stratospheric
notes and scream their souls out, but Jennifer basically out-emoted
all competition.
The
gut-buster is only part of the story in this 36-track extravaganza.
The first thing you notice about this album is its incredible
‘60s ambience and some top-tier audio production. Beyonce
Knowles delivered the goods and Eddie Murphy absolutely rocked
in I Meant You No Harm/Jimmy’s Rap. Jennifer Hudson
delivered other booms in I’m Changing and One Night
Only, but I had gotten used to the symptoms. What’s
more, even the dance remixes included in this soundtrack are
worthy of a few spins in Zoukout and Ba-Li-Ba. Now that’s
a killer combo.
