ALBUM REVIEW:
Will
the real Bob Dylan please stand up?
In
this soundtrack album to Todd Haynes’ film where actors
like Richard Gere, Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale take
turns to play the celebrated and talented singer-songwriter-musician-poet,
you get a generous serving of 34 Dylan songs spread over two
discs. Just like how different actors are giving different
personifications to Dylan in the film, his tunes are reinterpreted
by various artistes on this album.
The
who-whos of the music industry contribute over two hours of
music (160 minutes spread evenly over the two discs) which
are great to listen to, whether you are familiar with Dylan’s
songs or not.
Listeners
who are fans of Dylan will celebrate this catalogue of songs
which represent his music over the years. Ranging from 1965’s
“Highway 61 Revisited” to 1973’s “Knockin'
on Heaven's Door”, there is something for everyone.
Purists may smirk at the idea of having singers like John
Doe and Jack Johnson to perform their idol’s works,
but cast away those stereotypical ideas that new artistes
are not as good as the old, and you’d find yourself
enjoying the pleasing tunes presented on the album.
For
the younger listeners, this is a good opportunity to get acquainted
with Dylan’s legendary music which often touches on
politics, social issues and literary works. Listen hard to
the finely-written lyrics and you’d know his music is
not plain straightforward music written to entertain the masses.
For
example, “The Times They Are a Changin'” (which
was also featured on M. Night Shyamalan’s The Lady In
The Water soundtrack) is apparently a commentary on the farming
and mining communities in the 1960s.
The
only track sung by Dylan himself is the titular “I’m
Not There” which concludes Disc 2. The rare and obscure
song is taken off his 1975 studio album The Basement Tapes,
recorded with The Band (you can actually hear the difference
in the quality of the recording).
Interestingly,
you can compare the original version with alternative rock
band’s interpretation of it. Is the original performed
by the singer who has been ranked second in The Rolling Stone’s
“Greatest Artistes of All Time” (number one would
be The Beatles) better than its reinterpretation?
You’d
have to make your own interpretation on that.
