ALBUM REVIEW:
We think highly of actors who can croon a nice tune. And the
latest actor to join the league of talented artistes of Jim
Sturgess (Across the Universe), Amy Adams (Enchanted) and
Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls) is Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
The
first time this talented singer performed on a soundtrack
was back in 1998 on Todd Haynes’s music drama Velvet
Goldmine. Almost a decade later, Rhys Meyers stars in this
movie, playing a charming young guitarist who shares a magical
love story with a cellist. And the filmmakers made the right
choice to cast Rhys Meyers in this role, so the world can
hear his uniquely tender voice. The highlight of this 50-minute
soundtrack album has to be “This Time”, where
you’d be swept off your feet by the magnetic vocals
of the Irish actor. If we could croon like that, we are sure
we’d get any girl we wanted. Listen out also for “Bach
/ Break” and “Elgar / Something Inside”,
where classical pieces lead into rock arrangements featuring
Rhys Meyers’s vocals.
American
songwriter singer John Ondrasik (better known by his stage
name Five for Fighting) contributes a pleasant “King
Of The Earth” to the album, while R & B pianist
John Legend performs an affectionate “Someday”.
The album also features guitarist Kaki King (who plays the
guitar score in the Golden Globe-nominated film Into The Wild),
who impresses us with her skills on “Bari Improv”
and “Ritual Dance”.
There
are also two score cues composed by Mark Mancina (Tarzan,
Brother Bear) accompanied by majestic choir voices and featuring
Freddie Highmore’s (he plays the movie’s titular
child prodigy) achingly sweet voice. These tracks are inspiringly
uplifting to listen to, and everyone could do with a quote-worthy
line like “The music is all around us, all you have
to do is listen.”
Get
this soundtrack for its wonderful collection of music from
different genres, and prepare yourself for an immensely enjoyable
listening experience.
