SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
The Richard LaGravenese-directed movie tells the story of
how a young widow discovers messages left behind by her late
husband to help her lead a new life without him. The premise
sounds bittersweet and almost tragic, but the soundtrack to
this picture starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler is anything
but depressingly gloomy. The generous 57-minute helping of
music from the motion picture is a compilation of contemporary
songs which will appeal to today’s listeners.
The
disc starts charming us with Irish/English band The Pogues’
“Love You 'Till The End”. With guitars strumming
rhythmically in the background, the tune is a romantic composition
which will leave you smiling with its sweet lyrics. Then comes
James “You’re Beautiful” Blunt’s “Same
Mistake”. His signature voice on this track reminds
us why he became wildly popular with his breakout hit in 2005.
The other up can coming star to listen out for in this disc
has to be Ryan Star, the famed contestant on reality show
Rock Star: Supernova. His contribution “Last Train Home”
is an energetic and infectious composition which warrants
for repeated listening on your player.
Elsewhere,
there are more tranquil tracks like Scottish singer-songwriter
Paolo Nutini’s “Rewind”, critically-acclaimed
Toby Lightman’s “My Sweet Song” and British-born
musician Nellie McKay “P.S. I Love You”. Although
simpler in their arrangements, they still invoke emotions
of love and affection in different ways.
Concluding
the album is John Powell’s (United 93, X-Men: The Last
Stand) brief five-minute score cue from the movie. Primarily
featuring the guitar, this track showcases the English composer’s
flair for coming up with something light-hearted while stirring
the much-needed sentiments of devotion. It’s feelings
like that which we affectionately call love.
