ALBUM REVIEW:
Every once (no pun intended here) in a while, there comes
a great little film which does not make it to the cinemas
of our little island. This Irish musical film directed by
John Carney is one of them. But we are thankful that we are
able to get our hands on the soundtrack album, which consists
of some of the most soulful and inspiring songs we have ever
heard.
The
movie tells the love story of a Dublin busker credited as
Guy and a Czech immigrant flower seller credited Girl (no
kidding here) played by Glen Hasard and Markéta Irglová
respectively. The 13 songs on this 43-minute album represent
the musical and romantic journey the two undertake, where
songs are taught at a music store are sung while walking down
a street or at a party.
Already
nominated for two Grammys and having won the Los Angeles Film
Critics Association for Best Music, the album has been getting
acclaim everywhere. While we have not been able to catch the
well-received musical film here, the least we could get is
the lyrically bittersweet album playing our our players. Opening
the album is the beautiful “Falling Slowly”, which
has been nominated in the Best Song category at the upcoming
80th Academy Awards.
Following
the track are other compositions that will affectionately
stir your emotions. Listen out for calming “When Your
Mind’s Made Up”, the melancholic “The Hill”
and the stripped down “All the Way Down”. A very
pleasant surprise is the lively “Fallen from the Sky”
which will bring a smile to anyone who has had a gloomy day.
While
Hasard and Irglová are not trained actors, they are
professional musicians. Hasard is the vocalist and guitarist
for Irish rock group The Frames while Irglová is a
Czech musician-songwriter and that definitely gives this album
all the credibility it can get. The duo also performed their
version of Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going
Nowhere” on the “I’m Not There” soundtrack.
Hasard’s accessibly soothing vocals nicely complements
Irglová’s wistfully appealing voice, and that
makes this soundtrack highly recommended for any self-respected
audiophile. It’s also sweet to know that the two are
now dating – aww, the powers of music that brings people
together.
