SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
While we have no idea whether this Lajos Koltai-directed film
will make it to our shores, we are glad to hear its soundtrack
album, especially when it is scored by composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek,
who gave us the affecting Oscar-winning score to Marc Forster’s
Finding Neverland (2004).
Opening
the 44-minute disc is the three-minute “Opening Titles”,
which gives us an idea of what is to come in this classy and
refined soundtrack. The delicate strings, piano and woodwinds
quietly fill your room with lyrical splendor. And when the
beautiful female vocal seeps in halfway through the track,
you’ll feel like you are in heaven. A more satisfying
experience is on the last track “Evening”, which
gives you a full five and half minutes of this listening pleasure.
Elsewhere, there are lovely jazz song tracks like Ella Fitzgerald’s
well-loved “Time After Time”, Michael Buble’s
catchy “I've Got the World on a String” and Anita
O'Day’s heartfelt “Stella By Starlight”.
This album would make for one good lounge music companion.
But
what we still love best are still the score tracks composed
by Kaczmarek. The Polish composer enchants us with soothing
cues like the poetic “Anne Arrives”, the joyful
“Before the Wedding” and the articulately-performed
“The Dream Continues”. It is nice to hear the
flowing and graceful music from the award-winning composer
again after his last work.
We
have read how some soundtrack fans are lamenting that Claire
Danes’ rendition of “Time After Time” isn’t
included on this album, but for us, Kaczmarek’s score
tracks are enough to charm us.
