SYNOPSIS:
Lim Teng Zui reports to Tanya Chew, a high-ranking
officer working in one of Singapore's statutory boards. Teng
Zui's incompetence and poor work ethics contributes to a Minister
sustaining a fall during a visit by VIPs. An investigation
is carried out to find a scapegoat - not an unusual practice
in government bodies. The lowly-ranked Teng Zui shoulders
the blame alone thanks to the 'finger-pointing' by the upper
management.
Infuriated, Teng Zui confronts Tany. Their clash escalates
into a car chase, resulting in an accident which causes them
to exchange souls...
MOVIE REVIEW:
Jack Neo has all along have a penchant for social and political
issues or else he won’t be taking swipe after swipe
at our Singapore’s educational system in the “I
Not Stupid” series, the water issue in “Homerun”
and his social-satire box-office hit “Money No Enough”.
So
it comes as no surprise as he will target our civil service
some day. And yes, that some day has finally arrived in the
form of “Just Follow Law”.
In
“Just Follow Law”, our local comedian Gurmit Singh
plays Lim Teng Zui, a blue-collar worker in a fictional statutory
board, WAS while pretty babe, Fann Wong plays his immediate
supervisor Tanya Chew, a capable but “heartless”
officer.
While
Jack has good intentions to poke fun at our “efficient”
civil service, the jokes kind of run out-of-steam halfway
and venture into his usual preachy style in the third act.
No doubt you find the subordinate-and-supervisor predicaments
familiar, the back-stabbings and arrow-shootings laughable.
However the most note-worthy in “Just Follow Law”,
is the performance of Fann Wong that perhaps best stands out
from the otherwise SOP (standard operational procedure) of
a Jack Neo’s movie.
And
the cameo appearances of Lim Kay Siu, Selena Tan and Hossan
Leong really add some sparkles to the film as well. (Yup!
We do have very excellent local actors).
The
flow and theme of “Just Follow Law” might not
coincide with what initially panned out to be towards the
end. But still, it entertains and it educates along the way.
That’s the power of a Jack Neo’s movie.
SPECIAL
FEATURES:
Definitely one of the best local dvd ever available, you get
a whole disc loaded with chunks of special features. What’s
missing is just the cast and Director Jack Neo’s commentary
track. Wouldn't it be fun listening to Gurmit and Jack’s
bantering or are we asking too much?
Teaser Trailer/Trailer – We have the
teaser and final trailer here but since both are cut in the
same flow and manner, calling it version A and version B might
be more appropriate.
TVC
Spots – Include a couple of short promotional
tv spots to while away your time.
Making
of – There are in fact 2 making of segments,
the first is the usual cast and crew interviews, some behind
the scenes snippets probably one which you have seen countless
times on tv. The second segment touches on the making of the
car accident sequence in the movie. A nice fun fact coming
out from the horse mouth, director Jack Neo’s debut
in shooting a car accident sequence after ten movies. Wonder
what will Michael Bay say to that.
NG
Shots – There are over 10 minutes of NG shots,
it gets tiresome after a while however there are some which
are pretty hilarious. Enjoy!
Deleted
Scenes – Over 12 minutes of deleted scenes.
None are particularly crucial to the movie on the whole, well
at least Neo made the right choice of excluding them, otherwise
adding on to an already too long movie.
Alternate
Endings – We liked the second ending because
Mark Lee and MC King is a hoot. The first and the last are
ridiculous and will leave you with a sour taste.

AUDIO/VISUAL:
Mainly
dialogue here but at least you get to hear the clarity of
the cast sputtering Hokkien, Mandarin, English, Tamil and
Malay in this glorious un-dubbed version. The visual is passable
but already a stark improvement as compared to Neo’s
earlier big-screen projects.
