SYNOPSIS:
Will Ferrell is Ron Burgundy, a top-rated 1970's
San Diego anchorman who believes women have a place in the
newsroom- as long as they stick to covering fashion shows
or late -breaking cooking stories. So when Ron is told he'll
be working with a bright young newswoman who's beautiful,
ambitious and smart enough to be more than eye candy, it's
not just a clash of two TV people with really great hair-
it's war!
MOVIE REVIEW:
After Jim Carrey and Mike Myers, Will Ferrell is the latest
SNL alumnus to grace the screen in recent years with his trademark
madcap, deadpan comic delivery. With his frequent collaborator
director/writer Adam McKay, they came up with the antics of
a fictional anchorman, Ron Burgundy. A man who will read anything
that is placed on the teleprompter with intelligence lower
than the average man but egos twice as big than others.
The
story is set in the 70’s where male chauvinistic ruled
the earth (it’s still existing today but less significant
of course), having a female news anchor is considered sacrilegious
except covering gossipy, late-night events and cats fashion
show! In comes an ambitious sexy and smart girl, Veronica
Corningstone (played by Christina Applegate) vying for the
place of main anchor for the 6pm news slot. The slot occupied
by the most famous anchorman in San Diego, Ron Burgundy.
You
know you are going to have a great time ahead just by reading
the above.
You
know Will Ferrell and his bunch of merry men (Paul Rudd, David
Koechner, Fred Willard and Steve Carell) are going to shoot
expletives and insane one-liners and make jokes about the
anatomy like nobody business.
You
know Will Ferrell is going to deliver his usual exaggerated
performance sans the rubbery faces.
But
what you don’t know is the cameo appearances of Vince
Vaugh, Luke Wilson, and Tim Robbins and yes, you heard me
right Ben Stiller and Jack Black. We assumed Owen must be
hidden somewhere in the back.
For
a movie that runs at a slim 90 minutes, there are plenty of
gags and ongoings perhaps due to the superb spontaneous chemistry
and improvises by the actors on set. Produced by Judd Apatow
(40 year old virgin), it’s a pity Anchorman is given
the slip here on the big screen, well at least you can savour
the offensive humour in the privacy of your own home.
Stay classy, Singapore. This is Linus Tee signing off.
SPECIAL
FEATURES:
Feature Commentary - You have a whole bunch
of guests such as Paul Rudd, David Koechner in addition to
Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay on the commentary track.
Expect a rowdy and entertaining time, just sit back and enjoy
more jokes served by the gang.
"Afternoon Delight" Music Video
- Watch Ron Burgundy and his news team ham it up in this mtv
parody.
Cinemax making of Anchorman - A 10 minutes
making of special which consists of the usual generic stuff
such as cast and crew interviews.
Bloopers - We all know it will be hard to
put up a straight front if you are doing a Will Ferrell comedy.
This is the concrete proof.
Deleted Scenes - There are over 25 minutes
of deleted sequences. Some are extended scenes and some are
different takes of a same scene. Nevertheless, these are a
bunch of crazy stuff that shouldn't be missed.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
Since
this film is set in the 70's, everything onscreen seem to
age a little including the visual clarity, we wonder if it's
done on purpose. But overall, the sound mix isn't that bad,
at least you can hear very clearly Ferrell's screams and cries.
In addition, you might like to hear Ferrell speak in Thai
for a change.
