REVIEW
The Pick of Destiny is a movie soundtrack doubling as a sophomore
rock album, much as Jack Black is a rocker doubling as a movie
star. Unfortunately though, Jack Black is just not good enough
to have his cake and eat it. Make no mistake, this effort
is testament to the talent of the comedic rock duo Tenacious
D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) – it is dastardly difficult
to sound good and make (some) people laugh – but this
album is more “picture” music and works better
as a soundtrack.
Very
coarse language aside, Jack Black uses his magically expressive
voice and terribly politically incorrect lyrics to shed light
on his humble beginnings and illustrate the formation of his
rock band. With Nirvana/Foo Fighter Dave Grohl at the drums
and playing the devil, the music is loud and good.
The
D is probably spot-on with the album length as well. With
only two tracks managing to exceed the 3 minute mark, the
listener is properly tickled but not overdosed with the D’s
audacious music and vulgar lines. After all, the f-word and
cocks and tits can only be funny for this long. Now it’s
time for Jack Black and Kyle Gass to make some really funny
listening music.
