OUR REVIEW ON THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
Synopsis
:
Jack Black (JB) and Kyle Gass (KG) have formed a
band the likes of which has never been seen, and they called
themselves Tenacious D. This film is not just a list of things
that Jables and Rage Kage have done in the past, but it's
also a chronicling of their rise to power.
Movie
Review:
When
you dare to call your band “The Greatest Rock Band of
the World” and your movie “The Greatest Motion
Picture of All Time”; it’s either you’ve
got the guts to be so audacious or just plain brilliant.
Tenacious
D: The Pick of Destiny is surprisingly the combination of
those two qualities and in Singapore which received little
or no exposure to their TV series or albums, this is definitely
a great jumping board to the world of The D (the nick name
for Tenacious D).
All Great
Movies come with a great plot and here’s one for the
Oscar*! This is how Tenacious D got started. The first meeting
between Jack Black (JB, the lyrical poet) and Kyle Gass (KG,
the guitar maestro) that would eventually give birth to formation
of the Greatest Rock Band in the World!
But before
they could reach that attainment, they must first win the
Open Mic Contest at the local pub and they must create the
Greatest Rock Song ever to win the contest.
In the
midst of brainstorming, they discover a common link between
all the famous rock bands that has come before and it’s
the devilish green guitar pick that all the Rock and Roll’s
who’s who wielded it at least once in their career.
So it
begun: the journey for the legendary devil’s pick and
in many cases, it’s not the destination that matters
but the journey itself. Almost everything that is infamously
associated with rock and roll or heavy metal is presented
in delightful twist: the Devil and its thirst for rock musician’s
souls and the drugs binge.
It’s
an entertaining journey and largely derived from Jack Black
and Kyle Gass’s energized performance and their love
for rock and roll is simply too infectious. Their band and
this movie felt like an updated tribute to rock music in the
most comedic elements.
Beside
Jack Black and Kyle Gass’s wildly amusing performance,
watch out for the special appearance by Ben Stiller (who is
also the executive producer), Tim Robbins (who founded the
Actor’s Gang that JB & KG are a part of during their
college years), David Grohl (of Nirvana & Foo Fighters)
and Meatloaf in an almost unrecognizable role as young JB’s
dad.
The song
selection in this movie was as promised by the trailers; they
do knock your socks off. The amazing guitar riffs combined
with ridiculous and hilarious lyrics will have you rocking
and laughing at the same time. Now how many rockers dare to
proclaim that they are able to do that? The urge to visit
the nearest CD shop to get this movie’s soundtrack after
leaving the theatre is simply overwhelming.
It’s
crude, rude and extreme vulgar but it’s a whole lot
of fun especially if you ever groove to heavy rock music before.
Pretty much what most normal parents would have banned their
kids from watching but if you over 18, you are in luck as
Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny is shown in all their uncensored
glories.
