SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
So what if we did not exactly enjoy the Susie Au-directed
film which was balancing on the fine line of being artistic
and poseur? Soundtrack fans take note: this album is a gem
and must have on your shelf.
Featuring
60 generous minutes of music from the motion picture, this
album contains songs and score by various mainstream and alternative
musicians, ranging from the popular Jeff Chang (in the 1980s,
that is), Anthony Wong (one half of the duo Tat Ming Pair)
and husky-voiced Zhou Xun (who plays the titular heroine)
to the quirky girl band Material Girls and the never-heard-of
at17, Pixel Toy and Gayamyan (we assume they are alternative
bands).
While
the Wong and Zhou’s title song “Happy Wanderer”
(Cantonese version) and “Someone Like Me” (Mandarin
version) are conventionally hip tunes that you’d want
to include in your mobile player, do check out the hippy “Riot
Grrrl !” and “Man In Black” which are two
enjoyably trip-hop tracks to listen to.
There
are also lyrical compositions like “Vive La Jeunesse”
and “Paper Monk” which will soothe one’s
tensed up senses.
In
other words, there’s something for everyone in this
unique collection of music. There is also an elaborately designed
booklet with a collection of lush movie stills for you to
ogle at. And it sure helps that Golden Horse Award winner
Zhou is peeking at us sultrily from the pretty packaging.
