REVIEW
Some
movies are spot-on with their signature tunes. You have John
Williams’ creepy Jaws theme, and you have Howard Shore’s
majestic Lord of the Rings theme. Similarly, you’d instantly
recognize the Mission: Impossible (M:I) theme music the moment
it sizzles through the airwaves. It
is rather unfortunate then, that the highlight of this 65-minute
score album is strongly distinguished by the prominent M:I
tune composed by Lalo Schifrin. As a casual listener, the
only parts which you will pick up are those tracks featuring
the well-known “dum-dum-dee-dum” melody.
Before
Michael Giacchino, two other established composers Danny Elfman
and Hans Zimmer had attempted to put their personal flavour
into the music scores of the previous two M:I movies. Regrettably,
their efforts were not recognized by music critics. In Giacchino’s
case, his efforts in layering the underscore and developing
secondary themes can be strongly felt, but it is still not
enough to make the soundtrack album stand out uniquely on
its own.
Giacchino, who has worked with J.J. Abrams on television series
such as Alias and Lost, teams up with the great storyteller
to compose this score. Having begun his career working on
video game scores, this is one talented composer whose latest
work should be commended, especially when it is his first
summer blockbuster soundtrack.
The soundtrack
does evoke suspense and the tense atmosphere of espionage
throughout. With its fast and nervous tempo, accompanied by
harsh brasses and clobbering percussion, the score has effectively
created the strained excitement of the film.
There
are calmer moments in tracks like “Special Agent Lindsey
Farris” and “Ethan and Julia”, but they
somehow slow the pace of the album down. And as mentioned
above, whenever the major M:I theme appears, it overshadows
the rather forgettable score composed by Giacchino. That is
a pity, because upon closer and repeated hearings, you’d
appreciate the almost impossible mission of Giacchiano –
to re-create any brand-new recognizable theme music for this
successful movie franchise.
