ALBUM REVIEW:
Things sure have changed since The Little
Mermaid sang her heart out at the beaches, Pocahontas sang
her grievances on the rocky cliffs and Mulan sang her about
her spirituality at the shrines.
Now, we
have these up-and-coming young pop stars re-imagining what
classic Disney characters brought to life in animated movies.
Do not
expect traditional musical numbers where animated characters
break out into songs. Every song on this 15-track disc has
been given a trippy twist to appeal to the younger crowd.
After all, that’s where the money is coming from these
days.
But we
digress.
Whether
it’s American Christian rock band Jonas Brothers belting
their souls out in The Jungle Book’s “I Wan’na
Be Like You”, Ashley Tisdale sultrily singing The Little
Mermaid’s “Kiss The Girl” or Drew Seeley
soulfully singing Cars’ “Find Yourself”,
this 49-minute album can either introduce the younger ones
to the unique brand of Disney music, or put of purists who
cannot stand their favorite tunes being butchered to bits
by techno beats and synthesizer-happy tunes.
The general
direction this disc sets is a fizzy, bubbly and stress-free
one. Anyone can pop this album into their player and mindlessly
bop to the music.
The
bubblegum pop album will please today’s too-cool-to-be-true
kids. There is a formula to this disc that works – why
else would there be five volumes of this enjoyably agreeable
Disney compilation then?
