MOVIE REVIEW
Let’s
see, the last time I checked: I am well above 25 years old,
I am a straight guy, and I love noisy action blockbusters
which doesn’t require me to think too much. So why am
I endorsing this DVD which features two of Disney’s
favorite princesses?
Because
the themes explored in these two short animated episodes remind
me of how idealistic, simple and nice things were when I was
a kid. And how dreams can actually come true if you worked
hard enough.
In this
56-minute disc, Princess Aurora (from Sleeping Beauty) and
Princess Jasmine (from Aladdin) take viewers on a journey
inside their storybook worlds. In “Keys to the Kingdom”,
Princess Aurora is put in charge of the kingdom when her parents
go on a conference. She realizes that the task may not be
simple as it looks, and it’d be difficult not to use
magic to make things right. In “More Than A Peacock
Princess”, Princess Jasmine longs for a more important
role in the kingdom, and is ultimately put to the test when
her father’s beloved horse goes missing.
The more
cynical viewers will be scorning these simplistic storylines,
and laughing their heads off whenever the lovely princesses
break into songs. But I beg to differ, because these tales
are actually reminders of how we should lead our misguided
lives.
Take Princess
Aurora for example, whoever thought that the Sleeping Beauty
had the ability to run the kingdom, albeit the mess created
when she resorts to using magic to solve her problems? Ultimately,
it’s the realization that she has to solve her own problems
that counts.
And then
there’s Princess Jasmine, who realizes that perseverance
is of utmost importance when it comes to daunting tasks like,
err, finding a lost horse. But in the name of proving one’s
worth, hard work and self confidence are important traits
to have too.
The
animation may not be Pixar standard, but it is still decent
enough to get the young ones hooked on this straight-to-video
release. The melodic and catchy songs help to make the two
episodes merrily fun too. And at the risk of having readers
think that I’m childish/gay/too sensitive for my own
good, I shall go ahead and say that I truly enjoyed this DVD.
SPECIAL
FEATURES :
This Code 3 DVD contains two games that will entertain
young girls, but will probably bore any one older than eight
years old. In “Aurora Dress-Up”,
you can mix and match Princess Aurora’s outfit so that
she looks good. In “Find Sahara”,
you can help Princess Jasmine look for the missing horse by
pointing to the correct clues and directions. There is also
a music video “You’ll Never Lose This
Love”, which features Belle from Beauty and
the Beast. Included in the disc are Previews of
other Disney flicks like The Fox and the Hound, The Fox and
the Hound 2, The Jungle Book and an upcoming title Tinkerbell.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
The disc’s visual transfer enhances the clean-cut animation
which will appeal to young viewers, while there are Dolby
Digital 5.1 English, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, Korean and
Portuguese audio tracks to choose from.
