MOVIE REVIEW
You know
how there are TV series DVD box sets out there which will
look good on your display shelves. So why would anyone want
to own this Disney Channel series single-disc DVD which only
contains four episodes of the teenage drama?
We are
guessing that parents will be buying this for their kids to
pacify them during those short school holidays. It also helps
that the kids are fans of Hannah Montana. “Hannah who?”
we hear you ask. If you watch Disney Channel regularly at
home, you won’t find this sensational pop star unfamiliar.
Here’s
how the story goes: The 14-year-old rock star leads a double
life. Behind the blonde hair, the make-up and the glamour
is a typical high school student who has your usual teenage
problems like cliques, crushes and pressures.
The 92-minute
disc contains four episodes including the pilot episode “Lily,
Do You Want to Know a Secret”, “Miley Get Your
Gum”, “Money for Nothing, Guilt for Free”
and “I Can’t Make You Love Hannah if You Don’t”.
And in your good old Disney fashion, the episodes play out
wholesomely and actually milked quite a few chuckles out of
us. Both adults and kids will have a pleasant one and a half
hours watching the four short episodes. Sharp viewers will
also spot High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu cameos in
one of the segments.
14-year-old
Miley Cyrus plays the titular character with the right amount
of spunk and humor, while the goofy Mitchel Musso and the
charismatic Emily Osment play her best friends. Musician Billy
Ray Cyrus (real-life father of Miley’s) also has a part
as Hannah’s father cum artiste manager.
Each episode
proceeds like your usual TV series, where two storylines involving
different characters are presented. Cue canned laughter and
spot-on one-liners, accompanied by cutesy teenage performances
– and you’d have a fun time watching how Hannah’s
double life secret is revealed to her friends, how she goes
all out to beat her rivals in a charity fund-raising competition,
how she tries to reject her Hannah-loving friend by chewing
disgusting gum, and how she tries to go on a date with her
crush.
Lightweight,
fluffy stuff this is – but it makes for one easy-going
viewing for everyone.
