DONALD SUTHERLAND (1936 - 2024)

Donald Sutherland, whose acting career spanned six decades has died aged 88 after a long illness.

Starting his career back in the 60's and after a series of small roles on British TV shows and films, Sutherland was cast in the action film The Dirty Dozen, as one of a group of prisoners trained up for a dangerous mission during the second world war. The Dirty Dozen was a hit and Sutherland then appeared in another massively influential Korean war comedy M*A*S*H.

In the 1980s, Sutherland played the father of a suicidal teenager in the Oscar-winning Ordinary People. In the 2000s, he turned to TV, appearing in series such as Dirty Sexy Money and Commander-in-Chief. Despite his numerous roles, he was never nominated for an Oscar. He did receive an honorary Academy Award in 2017.

However, his biggest role to contemporary audiences might be The Hunger Games series where he played the tyrannical President Snow.
