REVIEW
Born 1945 in Northern Ireland, George Ivan Morrison grew up
on a steady diet of Ray Charles and Little Richard, cultivating
a jittery and virile sound that will entertain for the subsequent
60 years. Wildly experimental, Van Morrison does R&B,
jazz, blues and Celtic with equal aplomb – probably
one of the reasons he embarked on a 40-year relationship with
Hollywood movies. A collection of his greatest movie hits
is in order and rightly so, for after all, he was voted the
42nd Greatest Artist in Rock 'n' Roll by Rolling Stone and
is Laura Bush's favorite singer.
From
the breakout “Gloria” and “Baby Please Don’t
Go” to “Brown-eyed Girl”, “Have I
Told You Lately” and most recently “Comfortably
Numb”, Van Morrison starred in the soundtracks of movies
ranging from “An American Werewolf in London”
to “Born on the Fourth of July” to “As Good
As It Gets” to “The Royal Tenenbaums” and
“The Departed”. Heck, he even has two songs in
“Breakfast on Pluto”, one of my favourite movies
in 2005. Now that’s amazing.
