SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Jay Chou fans who believe in intellectual property will be
getting this 52-minute soundtrack album for the single end
title song he performs. Frequent crooners at karaoke pubs
will already know ‘Secret’, a track he composes
with his long time collaborator Fang Wen Shan. The mild rock
tune is beautifully written and sung in the Jay Chou style
we are all familiar with.
For
soundtrack collectors, there are about 24 other music and
song cues which appear in Chou’s directorial debut.
Together with Thai composer Terdsak Janpan, Chou demonstrates
his flair for music by not only composing original tunes,
he also personally performing piano classical pieces that
wowed us tremendously with its technicalities. You just need
to listen to ‘Piano Duel’ and ‘Piano Duet’
to get a testament of this. His large fan base all over Asia
definitely isn’t accidental. We are totally convinces
that this guy’s got talent.
Elsewhere, listen out for ‘Don’t Cry for Me, Girl’
and ‘Summer Doll’, which Chou composed specially
for the movie. The latter is a refreshingly chirpy breather
which will have you tapping your feet to the infectious melody.
There is also an oldie ‘Lover’s Tears’ which
will trigger memories for the nostalgic listener.
The
more emotional portions are felt in the second half of the
album, especially evident in ‘Secret’ and ‘Xiao
Yu’s Confession’. The heartfelt piano and strings
accentuate the sentiments of the characters in the movie.
Of course, it’d help a lot if you’d seen the film
while listening to the soundtrack. The earnest scenes will
replay in your mind, and maybe without you knowing, a tear
may have rolled down your cheek – such is the power
of an effective soundtrack.
