SOUNDTRACK REVIEW:
Like a master chef, composer Michael Giachinno cooks up another
delightful concoction of music that will please any soundtrack
lover.
His latest
work for Pixar Animation Studio’s movie about a rat
that can cook is to simply put it, delicious. The 62-minute
album contains score material that will brighten up any Scrooge’s
miserable day.
From French
Singer Camille’s breezy theme song “Le Festin”
which opens the 24-track disc, one can be sure that the listening
experience and will be light and pleasurable one. The evident
French flavor of the score can be heard in the brief “Welcome
To Gusteau's”, before woodwinds take over playfully
in “This Is Me”. Taking off from there, Giachinno
continues to enthrall us with engaging action cues like “Granny
Get Your Gun”, “100 Rat Dash” and “The
Paer Chase”, which reminded us of his memorable composition
for 2004’s The Incredibles.
Elsewhere,
expect playful and memorable tunes in “Cast Of Cooks”
and “Souped Up”. The refined and masterful orchestration
is nothing short of fun and enjoyable. Then there are more
lyrical and melancholic tracks like “Abandoning Ship”
and “Anyone Can Cook” where the main theme seeps
in quietly to touch your heart in the most affecting ways.
The best
bits of the entire album are contained in the lovely “End
Creditouilles”, where the first beats of the accordion
on this track will hook you on the get-go.
Having
watched the movie definitely helps you to appreciate the music
on this soundtrack better, and it is even more so upon returning
home and popping it in your player for repeated listens.
Like
fine cuisine, this soundtrack will leave you with an excellent
aftertaste.
