REVIEW
There
are soundtrack albums littered with songs from the movie,
and then there are those which feature film score recordings
which may not appeal to many listeners. So when a soundtrack
album which includes both these essential elements comes along,
we’d be pleasantly delighted. Because
songs and music which reflect the movie’s theme are
so difficult to come by in any soundtrack, imagine our surprise
when this album features a consistent approach throughout
its 52 minutes.
Produced
by a certain animation giant Pixar and marketed by a certain
global conglomerate known as The House of Mouse, this animated
flick boasts of one of the most memorable music style this
summer. And how aptly chosen they all are.
The
nine songs on this album are characterized by their accessibility,
with a mix of rock and country genres - nothing too angst-ridden,
nothing too boring. The soundtrack opens with the catchy “Real
Gone” performed by Sheryl Crow with the right amount
of spunk and energy.
There are also covers of old-time favourites like “Route
66” and “Life is a Highway” Artistes include
well-known singers like Grammy-winner John Mayer (who gives
a refreshing take in his version of “Route 66”)
and country band Rascal Flatts (who adds a nice touch of rock
in their rendition of “Life is a Highway”). Our
personal favourite is the psychedelic “Sh-Boom”
performed by 1970s British group the Chords. The tune will
have you swaying to its infectious rhythm.
The 20-odd
minutes of score on this album are signature Randy Newman-style.
The Oscar-winner, who has scored several other Disney Pixar
movies, creates a lively and active mood in his latest work.
Using electric guitars to spice up the strings and brass dominated
“Opening Race” is definitely a pleasant surprise.
There
is also the laid-back and lazy “Bessie” and relaxing
and tranquil “McQueen and Sally”, which will remind
you of the movie’s certain key scenes. When it comes
to more action-packed cues like “Pre-Race Pageantry”
and “The Big Race”, fans familiar with Newman’s
works will be reminded of his last Disney Pixar movie Monsters,
Inc. (2001).
If
there is one complaint about this soundtrack, it would be
the brevity of the score. It could have done with longer tracks,
as well as included more music material. Other than that,
this album would please any soundtrack fan, and make one good
driving companion.
