SYNOPSIS:
Fong Fong (Cecilia Cheung) is a shopaholic who is unemployed
and in debt because of her spending.
She decides to seek help from a psychologist, Gan Yan (Lau Chin
Wan). Meanwhile, Fong Fong meets Kong Fu (Jordan Chan), a millionaire
who is calculative when spending money but ironically, is also
a shopaholic. When Kong Fu refuses to see a psychologist because
he thinks it is a waste of money, Fong Fong has no choice but
to play the role of a psychologist...

REVIEW :
What’s
the best therapy to beat your daily stress? Shopping. What’s
the favourite national pastime in Singapore? Shopping. What’s
the best way to pamper your love one? Shopping. Many women
will definitely scream in delight when they hear the word,
“Shopping”. Walk along the long stretch of Orchard
Road during the month of Great Singapore Sale and you will
spot women with bags of their prized possessions.
You
might ask so what’s all these got to do with the dvd
review? You see, this movie I’m reviewing is titled
“The Shopaholics”. Cecilia Cheung plays Fong Fong,
a girl who is obsessed with shopping and I mean seriously
obsessed. She can go on expensive shopping sprees, splurging
on LVs and Guccis, crashing her credit card limit. Recognising
she’s psychologically sick, she visits a psychologist,
Gan Yan (Lau Ching Wan), himself is also down with a disorder
as well. And before the dust has settled, Fong Fong encounters
Kong Fu (Jordan Chan), a rich yet stingy young entrepreneur
and yes, he’s sick too. And somehow, the trio falls
in love in a short span of time.
Are
you still with me so far? If you think the plot is absurd,
wait till when the triangle love gets even more complicated
when their sickness and love issues get entangled and a well-known
psychologist (play by singer diva Paula Tsui) have to be brought
in to intervene with the affair.
Its
heart wrenching to see veterans like Lau and Jordan Chan resorting
to being lifeless puppets floating in this messy dismal production.
The characters are neither fully reflected out nor the whole
issue of being down with disorders is bone tickling. To add
insult to injury, Wai Kar Fai, the co-director of crime drama,
“Running Out of Time” and the highly watchable
romance, “Needing You”, helmed the movie. Is it
because his frequent collaborator, Johnny To is missing here
or is it the rampant piracy has invaded the creative process?
Well, I guess since the Great Singapore Sale is just round
the corner, I might as well indulged in some shopping myself.
One: To beat the stress out of me (after reviewing this title).
Two: To pamper my broken heart (my wish for the revival of
the HK film industry has once again tarnished).

A
pity there's no option for consumers to select between the
original cantonese or chinese language. You just have to stick
to the latter. Visually, it's rich and colors are vibrant.
