REVIEW
For
film lovers here in Singapore, we were wondering why Children
of Men, nominated for 3 Oscar categories, was never released
in theatrically. It has well known stars like Clive Owen to
front the movie and supported by Oscar Winner Michael Caine
and Julianne Moore, and a rather intriguing story to boost
but strangely, it didn’t make it to our local theatres.
Fret not as HVN will be satisfying our thirst to find out
about the buzz all about this nominated Oscar film with the
Children of Men’s Dvd.
Set
in the dystopian future like many Hollywood movies, Children
of Men had a rather new approach to the miserable future tales.
In 18 years, no child has been born and eventually, the last
of the human race will die and faces the possibility of extinction
for human race. Tick Tock, Time is running out.
It
creates a situation that makes one wonder; if humans are no
longer able to reproduce, is life worth fighting for anymore?
No matter what wealth one could inherit, there won’t
be any descendants to pass it to.
What
would life be like in such a situation? Children of Men paints
a decaying lifestyle filled with despondent faces walking
around. United Kingdom is now removing all foreign citizens
from their country and that action creates a group of fugitives
that are branding together against the government.
Setting
the film in motion, a former activist, Theo (Clive Owen) with
some connection with the government, was brought along to
escort a young pregnant woman from the group of fugitives
out of the country as soon as possible. During this perilous
journey, they will discover that not everyone sees hope in
the same way and the survival of man kind could probably depends
on human working together.
I
would brand this movie as a thinking man’s thriller
and it will leave a lot of afterthoughts after the movie ended.
It also has one of the better cinematography among the peers
and it’s quite a waste that it didn’t get that
award in that category. Movie lovers shouldn’t miss
catching this film now that it’s available in Singapore.
SPECIAL FEATURES :
One of the highlight of the movie was the long fluid
take with action sequences that occurs in a few distinct periods
of the movie. Long take meaning the video camera filmed the
whole sequence without any cuts or editing and it’s
a rather difficult feat to perform. The main actors, the extras
and all the stunt personals have to rehearsal well and work
as one. Preparation and ingenuity have to be applied here
to create camera works to capture the long sequence.
If
you appreciate those long sequences in this movie, you will
definitely want to check out this extra feature that gives
some insights on how some of the tricky camera works were
done.
AUDIO/VISUAL:
The film is presented in 5.1 English and Thai soundtracks
and comes with Cantonese, English, Korean, Mandarin, Indonesian
and Thai Subtitles. This Dvd presents the movie in 1.85:1
Anamorphic Widescreen.
